Elder Angels
THE VISION
Hale Aumakua Ohana is a place where elders and young can go to communicate, love and serve one another while preserving cultural diversity and experiences to all. Elders who require some assistance to remain independent can come to this place to live independently with the support of young people who take shifts in assisting with what the elders may need to remain independent as an alternative to folks looking at expensive nursing home care.
Part of the Health Care Crisis can be addressed by providing services that are geared to the care needed at less cost. At the same time, providing a greater quality and more fulfilling way of life for all involved. Being Multicultural will provide educational opportunities for participants. Family atmosphere and meals provided. Transportation to and from Dr. appts and shopping needs, recreation, etc.
The Elder-Young Project vision is to bring together young people and our Elders in a positive way that enhances the lives of both while providing much needed services to all participants as well as the community as a whole.
Allowing and supporting the indigenous traditions of RESPECT FOR ELDERS and the passing on of lessons and cultural teachings from generation to generation. While indigenous cultures are founded on this principle; it has all but been lost in the demanding modern world’s way of life.
The Aumakua are the ancestral spirits that guide us and protect us while living. Aumakua also are the spirits that help souls transition out of the body at the time of death. HALE AUMAKUA OHANA seeks to provide a spiritually based hospice center for those preparing to leave the body behind. Rather than a nursing home environment, it would be a family and sacred type of environment.
There is much need for instilling values in our young people of all ages. Since both parents must work to provide a living and with overcrowded schools there is a great need.
The widespread problems of drug abuse on our society is already out of hand and youth today need positive alternatives and places to learn such values, while at the same time learning about other cultures and their views.
We owe it to our elders and our children to maintain the legacies of each while caring for one another in positive ways for the future.
The Elder-Young Project seeks to bring together young people and elders in an energetic, inspiring, and fulfilling exchange. The Hawaaian concept of Ohana, or family, will profide for people from all religions and races in a family type environment which provides assistance to elders who need minimal care to remain independent in life. Young people who volunteer will be given the opportunity to learn to serve from the heart of service while they listen to and assist an elder. In alternating 2-4 hour shifts, everyone gets the chance to meet everyone, resulting in educational support that is not available in any other way.
Public programs can be arranged to promote the stories of the elders in writing, video, readings, art, and many avenues. This will help promote and fund donations to the project.
Funding will be sought from State and Local housing authorities and non-profit housing entities as well as donations.
